How multi-port chargers divide power

A 65 W charger with three ports almost never gives 65 W to one device while others are plugged in, and the division is rarely even.

One power stage, several mouths

Multi-port chargers have one power stage shared between the ports. When you plug in a second device, the charger re-runs the negotiation and hands out a fixed division that the manufacturer decided in advance. That division is usually lopsided and often surprising.

The Anker 735, in full

The Anker 735 is a clear example. Alone, its top USB-C port gives 65 W. With the second USB-C also in use it becomes 45 plus 20. But pair the second USB-C with the USB-A instead and the whole charger drops to 12 plus 12, twenty-four watts out of sixty-five, purely because of which sockets you chose.

Why this data is hard to find

This information exists in manufacturer manuals, and it is almost never in the marketing copy or in retailer listings. Collecting it is the main reason wattaire exists. Where a maker does not publish the table, we mark the product as unknown rather than guessing.

match the split table to your two most demanding devices, not the total wattage on the box.

on most chargers the port nearest the edge or marked with a symbol is the strong one. Use it for the laptop.
